You know, most people don’t spend their birthdays in the editing room of upcoming superhero movies, recording footage off of the monitors on their cell phones and uploading them to the internet. That’s because most people would be arrested for that kind of thing.
But those rules don’t apply to Zack Snyder. That’s because he’s directing Justice League and if he wants the world to see murky footage of Aquaman in action, that’s literally his business. And if you think about it, this is really business as usual for Zack Snyder, who already introduced the live-action version of the character via murky, pirated security camera footage in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Zack Snyder, who turned 51 years old today (happy birthday, Zack!), shared the following footage on his Twitter account, and yes it’s hard to make out clearly, but it’s still clearly Jason Momoa swimming in a CGI environment and talking to a guy who looks a heck of a lot like Anthony Hopkins looked in the Thor movies, albeit underwater.
Aquaman is one of the big question marks of the DC Extended Universe. Over the decades the character has had an unfortunate reputation with casual fans, whose perspective of the underwater hero is often skewed by an ineffectual interpretation of the character in the beloved Superfriends cartoon series. But that was decades ago, and now Warner Bros. has cast the massively ripped and badass actor Jason Momoa to bring the character to the big screen. After Zack Snyder is through introducing Aquaman (properly) in Justice League later this year, Furious 7 director James Wan is scheduled to helm a solo movie about him to be released in 2018.
It’s a major makeover for Aquaman, at least in the mainstream. Fans of the character in the comics have known for years that Arthur Curry, King of Atlantis, is an exciting and multifaceted superhero who combines elements of sword-and-sorcery fantasy with ecological narratives and good old-fashioned crime fighting kick-assery.
Anyway, enjoy movie piracy when Zack Snyder does it, but don’t celebrate your birthday by doing the same thing. We’re pretty sure Warner Bros. wouldn’t like it very much.
