‘Game of Thrones’ Star Joins Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’

Ramsay Bolton may have lost the Battle of the Bastards on Game of Thrones, but Iwan Rheon is already heading back to TV as the leading villain of Marvel’s Inhumans series on ABC.

Earlier today, Marvel announced that Rheon will portray Maximus in the Inhumans series. The company described Maximus as “a clever and charming Inhuman that is fiercely devoted to the people of Attilan, especially his brother, the King – although he harbors an intense desire to wear the crown himself.” But comic fans know the character best as Maximus the Mad, and he’s never been all that loyal to his brother, Black Bolt. In fact, Maximus has been the Inhumans’ most frequent adversary for the past five decades.

Casting Rheon in this role is a stroke of genius, as he not only resembles Maximus, but the character isn’t that far away from Ramsay on Game of Thrones. However, we suspect Maximus may have more redeeming features than Ramsay, and he could also become the Loki of this series if fans respond to Rheon’s portrayal.

Inhumans showrunner Scott Buck said “Maximus is a complex character. Likable, charming, tragic and villainous all in the same moment, and I’m very excited to have someone of Iwan’s considerable talent.” Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb added “Iwan’s ability to be charming, roguish, and still completely unexpectedly dangerous were all the different sides we needed to bring the character to life. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

Rheon is the first major cast member announced for the Inhumans series, which will launch this fall with a two-week run in IMAX theaters before an eight-episode first season on ABC later in September.
