Ed Brubaker Teams Up With ‘Drive’ Director For Amazon Crime Series

For well over a decade, Ed Brubaker has established himself as one of the best crime writers in comics, through his series Criminal with artist Sean Phillips. Now, Brubaker is joining forces with Drive director  Nicolas Winding Refn on a new crime drama for Amazon that is going straight-to-series.

Variety broke the story that Brubaker and Refn are collaborating on Too Old To Die Young, a drama that will delve into Los Angeles’ criminal underworld while exploring “various characters’ existential journeys from being killers to becoming samurai’s in the city of angels.” Brubaker and Refn will co-write the series, while Refn will direct it as well. There are no stars currently attached to the series, but Variety notes that “three notable male actors have been offered roles.” The project is expected to film later this year for a 2018 debut.

Amazon previously produced Refn’s most recent feature film, The Neon Demon. Brubaker is coming off his his stint on HBO’s Westworld, but he is best known for writing Batman, Captain America, Catwoman, Daredevil, Secret Avengers, and other superhero titles. More recently, Brubaker shifted his focus towards his creator owned comics including Fatale, Velvet, The Fade Out, and Kill or Be Killed. Because of his work on Captain America, Brubaker even had a cameo appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
