Filmmaker Terence Nance Muses on Jimi Hendrix’s Skydiving Skills

Writer director Terence Nance is best known for his boundaries and genre pushing debut feature film An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, but has also racked up a handful of experimental shorts that mark him as one of the most exciting, possibly most important, young American filmmakers working today. His most recent short, Jimi Could Have Fallen from the Sky, which he premiered at Sundance, takes a surreal look at the possible source and evolution of Jimi Hendrix’s prodigious gifts. Set in the icon’s birthplace of Seattle, the film is part of the “Project Five by Five” series in which five filmmakers were invited to Seattle to create short films about the city. Each film is dedicated to one of the five senses.

Notes accompanying the film read: This short is the unauthorized, heavily abridged, biographical, visual and supersonic moment about the fact that Johnny Allen Hendrix (aka Jimi Hendrix) knew how to skydive. Set in Seattle where Jimi was born and raised, the film wonders aloud about what this skill meant for the life he went on to lead. Why did he retreat to the sky so quickly before all of us were ready for him to go?
