The Witchblade comic book series may have ended, but the franchise may have found new life on NBC.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has placed a new take on Witchblade in development with a script commitment deal with Sony Pictures TV. The Vampire Diaries showrunner Caroline Dries and CSI veteran Carol Mendelsohn are behind the potential series, which makes a few changes to the source material. The main character is still homicide detective Sara Pezzini, but it implies that she’s had the Witchblade her entire life. And the setting has been changed from New York to San Francisco.
“On the hunt for an elusive serial killer, [Sara Pezzini] must navigate the grisly streets and police politics of San Francisco’s Mission District — until one day the bracelet she has worn her entire life gives her supernatural insight into a crime she’s trying to solve. Her bracelet is the Witchblade, an amulet that has been worn by remarkable women throughout history, and Sara is next in line.”

The Witchblade comic was created by Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, Brian Haberlin, and David Wohl during the ’90s, and it was one of Top Cow’s most successful titles for many years. Within the comic book realm, the Witchblade was an incredibly powerful weapon that could only be worn by a woman, and even then it tended to have a mind of its own. Back in 2001, Yancy Butler starred in a Witchblade TV series on TNT that ran for two seasons. This time, NBC may be better suited to further explore the mythology of the comic and possibly introduce more characters from the Top Cow universe. It’s unclear if the series would actually run on NBC, or if sister networks Syfy and USA would be in the running for it.
