Take a First Look At The New ‘Teen Titans’ Animated Movie

Back in 1984, Marv Wolfman and George Perez put the Teen Titans through “The Judas Contract,” one of the most popular and controversial storylines in the history of the franchise. Numerous attempts to accurately adapt the story have been made over the last three decades, but it’s finally happening later this year with the release of Teen Titans: Judas Contract animated movie.

Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that returning cast members Sean Maher, Kari Wahlgren, Jake T. Austin, Taissa Farmiga, Brandon Soo Hoo, and Stuart Allan will be joined by two key additions: Christina Ricci as Terra, and Miguel Ferrer as Deathstroke the Terminator. Ferrer died a few hours after the announcement was made, making this one of his final appearances.

There are spoilers ahead for Judas Contract. You’ve been warned!

In the original storyline, Deathstroke put into motion an elaborate plan to defeat the Titans by placing Terra on the team as his spy. But the really eyebrow-raising incident was the way that the story implied that the teenage Terra was in a sexual relationship with Deathstroke, who was in either his ’40s or ’50s. Somehow, we doubt that angle will remain intact with this film that is likely to be geared towards families and children.

Thanks to the two Teen Titans animated series on Cartoon Network, many modern fans are unaware of the team’s true legacy in comics. At one point, the New Teen Titans comic rivaled even the X-Men in sales. While the franchise has never quite regained those heights of popularity, the characters are still considered to be  one of DC’s flagship teams.

The new “Judas Contract” adaptation will only be loosely inspired by the comic, and it will feature some different members of the team including Blue Beetle, who hadn’t been created when the original story came out. The film will be released this spring at a date to be announced.
