It’s no coincidence that Gorillaz have released their first new song in six years a day before Donald Trump’s Jan. 20th inauguration. The Damon Albarn led-cartoon band doesn’t hide its disdain for the soon-to-be 45th President of the United States in “Hallelujah Money”.
The politically-charged track features UK singer-songwriter Benjamin Clementine (is it me or does he have an Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass from Unbreakable thing going on?) standing in Trump tower, riding a gold-plated elevator, while crooning Bing Crosby-like over a darkly, foreboding classic Gorillaz beat.
Albarn, who has been dropping hints at a full Gorillaz album the past six months, chimes in at the end of “Hallelujah Money” to add some levity to to the anti-Trump anthem, “When the morning comes, we are still human. How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love?”
