‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Adds Doug Jones & Anthony Rapp

The new Star Trek TV series is just six months away, but the first members of the crew have only just been discovered.

Via our sister site, SuperHeroHype, CBS All Access has made the duel announcement of two regular cast members for Star Trek: Discovery: Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp. Jones is best known for playing aliens, monsters, and creatures in Falling Skies, Hellboy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Pan’s Labyrinth and many other genre films. Appropriately enough, Jones will once again be playing an alien on Star Trek: Discovery. In fact, his character, Science Officer Lt. Saru, will be a brand new alien race that has never previously appeared on Star Trek before.

As for Rapp, he is a Broadway veteran who has starred in Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, If/Then, and numerous other shows. He’ll be playing Lt. Stamets, “an astromycologist, and fungus expert” who is stationed on the Discovery. It’s also rumored that Stamets may be the first openly gay crewmember of a Star Trek TV series.

Additionally, CBS confirmed ComingSoon‘s report that Michelle Yeoh has joined the show as a starfleet captain…she just isn’t the captain of the Discovery. Instead, Yeah will portray Captain Georgiou of the starship Shenzhou. It’s not clear how big of a role that Yeoh will have in the series, but she clearly won’t be a member of the Discovery crew.

While the captain of the Discovery remains uncast at the moment, we do know that the main character will actually be the female first officer of the Discovery, who has also yet to be cast. Star Trek: Discovery is still scheduled to debut on CBS in May 2017, before moving to CBS All Acess for the remainder of its first season.
