Boom! Studios Reveals ‘The Dark Crystal’ Comic Book Sequel

Back in the ’80s, The Muppets creator Jim Henson wasn’t afraid to go dark, even if younger audiences weren’t ready for films like Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal. While both of those movies have earned fan followings in years since their release, only Labyrinth received a comic book sequel…until now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boom! Studios and the Henson Company are adapting the unproduced Dark Crystal sequel script as a new 12-issue miniseries called The Power of the Dark Crystal.

The Power of the Dark Crystal’ will be a 12-issue series from Boom! Studios, Archaia, and the Henson Company based on an unproduced screenplay following the 1982 fantasy movie. The original script was written by David Odell, Annette Odell and Craig Pearce, and it will be adapted by writer Si Spurrier and artists Kelly and Nichole Matthews. Comic veteran Jae Lee provided the cover image that you can see below.

The new story will reportedly take place decades after the first film, as the original heroes, Jen and Kira, lose touch with the people after years of ruling Thra together. In response, “a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. Unfortunately, that mission might also restore the Skeksis, as well.”

“The creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series,” said Lisa Henson in a statement. “We are very proud of the story that the screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce wrote. Our partners at Archaia and BOOM! Studios are the only people we could trust to expand and illustrate the story, and we are thrilled that it will soon see the light of day!”

The Power of the Dark Crystal # 1 will hit comic book stores on February 15, 2017, just in time for the 35th anniversary of the film.
