The 15 Scariest Horror Movies of All Time

Never trust a horror fan who claims that horror movies don’t frighten them. They’re either just putting on a bold façade in a misguided attempt to impress you or they don’t like horror movies as much as they think they do.

Because horror movies are SUPPOSED to frighten you. If you can’t let your anxieties out to play once in a while, you’re not watching scary movies on their own merits. You’re probably watching them as an endurance test or, even worse, you’re watching them ironically. The best horror movies ever – that is to say, the scariest horror movies of all time – are trying to reach you on a very genuine level. So let them try. Let the fear consume you. At least until the closing credits.

I’ve seen more horror movies than most people. It’s a boast, it’s my job. If I hadn’t seen that many horror films I would be spectacularly unqualified to be a film critic. And I still get scared. Not all the time, not every horror movie is all that effective, but every once in a while I still see films that freak me out, make me clutch the arm rests, or leave me cowering in a fetal position wondering if there is any good left the universe anymore.

The following fifteen films are the ones that scare the hell out of me, and the ones that I think will scare the hell out of you too. But your mileage might vary. That’s the point. Horror movies are trying to reach you on a primal level and what terrifies one person isn’t guaranteed to terrify everybody else. But it’s always good to learn more about the best horror movies, the ones that are freaking out everybody else, and watch them for yourselves to see if they shock you too. So don’t bother debating these, it’s pointless. If you disagree just share your own picks for the scariest films of all time and let your dread spread!
