Donald Glover is the New Lando Calrissian!

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story coming out in less than two months we, as a whole planet, must now turn our eyes to the next Star Wars movie, and the next one after that. Actually, we’re just never going to stop talking about Star Wars movies. This is the way the world works now. There’s no looking back.

But today, at least, we can start looking forward to some damned good casting. StarWars.com reports that Donald Glover, star of Community and Atlanta, who also records music under the name “Childish Gambino,” has just officially been cast in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off about the adventures of young Han Solo. The role was originally played in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi by the great Billy Dee Williams.

Donald Glover has been a fan-favorite ever since he campaigned to play Spider-Man in the reboot The Amazing Spider-Man, and eventually led to his casting in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series as Miles Morales and the latest, upcoming live-action reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Star Wars spin-off is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors of the hit comedies The LEGO Movie21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. Alden Ehrenreich from Beautiful Creatures and Hail, Caesar! has been cast in the lead role. The film’s official title has not yet been revealed, but it’s usually referred to as “Young Han Solo” in the press.

The history between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian has been hinted at in the films but never officially catalogued. The new Star Wars films only consider the previous theatrically released features to be canonical, so just about the only thing we know for sure about Calrissian is that he used to be crook, he eventually becomes a respectable businessman, and he own the Millennium Falcon before losing the ship to Han Solo in a card game. Perhaps we’ll see that scene in the upcoming film?

The Han Solo movie is currently scheduled for released on May 25, 2018.
