The Nintendo Switch is officially Nintendo’s upcoming new console.
The brand new system received a 3-minute trailer today, revealing its design, multiple controller methods and even unveiling a brand new 3D Mario game. With Nintendo having mostly maintained a radio silence regarding the console, previously code-named the NX, up until this point, there has been a variety of speculation surrounding the hardware. As predicted, certain recurring elements of this speculation has now been confirmed as true, with the Switch being a home console/handheld hybrid with a detachable display and controller for portable use.
The debut teaser revealed a selection of controller methods, with the system able to be snugly packed away into a docking station after use. Alongside the 3D Mario game highlighted in the reveal, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also made an appearance alongside an unannounced sword-fighting game and an NBA title, suggesting more third-party support than Nintendo enjoyed with its previous hardware.
As far as teasers go, it’s far more effective than the confusing and underwhelming Wii U reveal. While the Wii U certainly had its positives, the Switch looks set to be a major upgrade over its predecessor, with its detachable display seemingly being of a much higher quality when compared to the Wii U GamePad.
A statement from Nintendo reads: “Introducing Nintendo Switch! In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.”
