Nidhogg 2 Looks Very Different From its Predecessor

Nidhogg 2 has been revealed, and it looks to be a dramatic departure from its popular predecessor.

The original Nidhogg boasted a very simple visual style, with it featuring a limited color palette and stickman-esque, featureless combatants. However, a newly released, 17-second trailer for its sequel has revealed that Nidhogg 2 bears little resemblance to the original game.

Although the premise is still the same, with two players battling it out to rush to the opposite end of a level, Nidhogg 2‘s player-characters look very different from the two guys who duked it out in the first game. The art style is different, too; while it still takes place across a 2D plain, there’s far more detail in the environments and it seems to take inspiration from 16-bit games, rather than the 8-bit homage of the original Nidhogg.

PC Gamer announced the sequel, with the game’s creators stating that the new visual style was a result of them hiring a new artist, Toby Dixon, to take the reins, with them looking to “go further with that humor and grotesqueness.”

Nidhogg 2 will also feature new combat mechanics, allowing for more weaponry such as bows, daggers and axes, while the levels will feature more dangers such as “sticky floors or stuff that pushes you around or stuff that takes your weapons,” according to Meshoff’s Mark Essen.
