Tim Tebow officially gave up his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL last month when he signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets. While many are awaiting the former Heisman Trophy winner to strike out with the move to pro baseball, the 29-year-old made jaws drop in his first game Wednesday.
Tebow’s very first pitch in minor league baseball? Home run.
The home run came off St. Louis Cardinals farmhand John Kilichowski, a 22-year-old with a 3.38 ERA through 11 games.
“It was fun. I just wanted to have the approach that I was going to be aggressive,” Tebow said. “That’s something that we’ve been talking about here every day and practicing it.” …
… “I liked a lot of my at-bats today,” Tebow said. “I hit the ball really hard four out of the six times. … Four of the at-bats I felt really, really good about. Didn’t swing at any breaking balls, didn’t feel like I got fooled seeing it out of the (pitcher’s) hand.”
The hit for Tebow comes out of an Instructional League game, which isn’t necessarily the most impressive feat. He also finished 1-for-6 for the day. But he had no strikeouts, so it’s a start.
