Sam Allardyce has left the England national team, though he will forever be remembered as boasting the greatest win ratio of any England manager in international football history.
“Big Sam” may have had his tenure as England coach cut short in embarrassing fashion, with the FA booting him from his post following The Telegraph‘s revelation that he had been accepting money from third parties to navigate the governing body’s transfer rules, but there’s one thing the FA can’t take away from him: his 100% win ratio.
Yes, after besting Slovakia 1-0 deep into injury time during England’s World Cup qualifying match, Allardyce has left England with the most impressive record of any England manager in history. Kind of. If you skip the whole “being sacked after trying to flog players to undercover reporters” thing.
According to The Telegraph, FA chairman Greg Clarke and chief executive Martin Glenn held an emergency meeting with Allardyce at Wembley Stadium, in which they offered to allow the 61-year-old to step down from his position rather than outright sack him. As such, Allardyce technically resigned from the squad with a perfect 100% win percentage.
This statistic puts Allardyce’s predecessors to shame. The beleaguered Roy Hodgson only managed to garner a paltry win percentage of 59%, while the moderately more successful Fabio Capello managed 66.7%. It’s commendable, then, that Allardyce managed to maintain such an impeccable record considering the dire England squad at his dispense.
An official announcement is expected to be made by the FA later tonight. Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate is predicted to take charge of the squad on an interim basis, before a new permanent manager is appointed.
