Whatever je-ne-sais-quoi is, French indie pop duo Papooz have it. Listen for yourself as Crave is exclusively premiering their hip-swaying, tropical-laced cover of American indie songwriter Arto Lindsay’s cult classic song, “Simply Are.”

The seventies influence of Armand Cottin and Ulysses Penicaut can be heard as the track sounds retro, but not old. Kinda like the younger, cooler cousin of Peter, Bjorn and JohnThe cynical, yet melodic ditty sets the fun-filled tone of the video featuring the pair holding back perma shit-eating grins as they go on a sun-kissed adventure with model Sasha Melnychuk.

We grabbed a quote from Ulysses about the”Simply Are” song and video:

“‘Simply Are’ is the first track by Arto Lindsay we listened to, and we were both struck by its strange beauty. It is a perfect pop song, with a great chorus, a cool musical hook, and some outstanding lyrics. The chill vibe and the weird tropical arrangement of this track also really talked to us. So we jammed through the song a couple of times with our band. We speed up the beat a little, added some funky guitar parts, and recorded it at « Les studios Saint-Germain » one afternoon in Paris. A couple of weeks later, we shot a R.Steevie Moore alike video clip – mostly because we had zero money- with our friend Léo Haddad in Ulysse’s bedroom. We sent it to Arto Lindsay via Instagram… and he actually answered back he liked it!”

The Parisian pair is set to release their new self-titled EP on September 30th. For more information on Papooz go here.
