Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie has been a long time in the making, with the famed documentarian finally releasing the debut trailer for the film ahead of its October release.
My Scientology Movie will see Theroux attempt to go behind the scenes of the controversial religious group, only to be denied access. As a result, he instead decides to stage auditions with young actors who assume the roles of various Scientology leaders, recreating alleged events that had been carried out by its members. As a result, Theroux and his documentary crew ultimately wind up being tailed by the religious group in an attempt to get them to stop filming their movie, granting them an opportunity to see the inner-workings of the church at the same time.
It’s a unique deviation from how documentaries on the infamously secretive religious group have previously been presented, with them typically relying on talking heads previously affiliated with the church speaking out against its practices. Rather than go down this route, Theroux has instead decided to actively bait Scientology into appearing in his documentary, and judging by his track record it will no doubt result in a barrage of hilariously uncomfortable moments.
My Scientology Movie will appear in select UK cinemas on October 10, and will be available on DVD and digital in Australia from October 5. You can check out the list of participating cinemas right here.
