If you’re not yet familiar with Chris D’Elia, now is a perfect time to get acquainted. His latest stand-up special “Chris D’Elia: White Male, Black Comic” is now available on Comedy Central Direct and it’s fantastic. Chris was nice enough to chat with us about the special, and the time a lady attacked him during a performance.
So for anyone who hasn’t seen “White Male, Black Comic” yet, what can you tell them about it?
It’s something that I worked on for years and I’d been wanting to get the material out there. I talk about church, I talk about black dudes laughing, I talk about having sex. All that kind of stuff.
Are you traveling a lot right now or only doing local shows, at the moment?
I started traveling again this month, and I’ve been shooting my show which keeps me pretty busy.
Chris’ new show “Undateable” premieres towards the end of this year on NBC.
What are some of your favorite venues to do stand-up?
My two favorites are The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. I like performing in Los Angeles the most because those audiences are normally harder than the ones on the road. That way I can get a really good feel for what material works and what doesn’t. But there are a lot of cities I love performing in, like San Francisco and Chicago. I always love performing in New York. Vancouver is great as well.
What are some of the strangest things that have happened to you while on stage?
I had a guy throw a pencil at me once, which was really weird. Another time a lady got mad at me and charged the stage.
Wait, why did the guy throw a pencil at you?
I have no idea. It was so weird. Nothing had happened and I was just doing my joke, then he threw a pencil at me.
Is it just me, or is it weird that he was carrying a pencil with him to a show?
I think it was from the club, like for them to fill out surveys or something, but still, why would you do that?
What happened with the girl who charged the stage?
I was making fun of her and she just decided to run up on stage and try to grab the mic.
Did she actually get to you?
Oh absolutely. She charged up on stage and grabbed the mic from me because she didn’t like what I was saying.
What did you do?
I sat down. I mean there’s not much you can do. It’s a girl so it’s not like I was going to fight her.
Who are some of your biggest influences in comedy?
I would say Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey. I love those guys, they’re so funny to me.
Who would you say are some of your favorite people you follow on Twitter?
I like following Rob Delaney. Jordan Rubin is great. Jenny Johnson is one of my favorites as well. Those three are definitely my favorites.
