The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research has received more than $265,000 in donations, and it’s still growing, CBC News reports – the final Tragically Hip show in Kingston this past weekend saw one in three Canadians tuning in – and turning the cash in to help research and find a cure for Downie’s terminal brain cancer.
“We have heard from Canadians across the country, in the United States and around the world who organized events to watch the show and collect donations,” Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre said in a press release Monday.
Meanwhile, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder honoured The Hip singer by bringing awareness to a Chicago crowd Saturday night. “There’s something going on north of the border tonight,” Vedder told thousands of people in the audience at Wrigley Field (CBC News). “It involves somebody that we consider a family member just ’cause he’s part of the group of touring musicians we’ve met over the years. “There’s a guy who’s got a band called Tragically Hip… So they’re up there, going through the emotions up there. I just want to send them our energy from our gathering up to their gathering up there, and wish the best to Mr. Gord Downie. We love you.”
