Game of Thrones may be coming to an end in two years, but HBO is already looking ahead at its next potential franchise. At the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO finally revealed when Westworld will bow, as well as other programming developments.
According to Deadline, HBO will premiere Westworld on Sunday, October 2; which is near the start of the fall 2016 TV season. The series is a modernized take on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld, with an impressive cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and Tessa Thompson. The series takes place in the near future, as androids in a massive theme park gradually develop self-awareness and rebel against their human masters.
Surprisingly, HBO head of programming Casey Bloys indicated that True Detective could still return for a third season, even though he admitted that series creator Nic Pizzolatto may not write it, and he added that there isn’t currently a time table for its return or even a “take” on what the season should be. As for the possible Deadwood TV movie, Bloys said only that David Milch is working on it.

On the comedy front, Bloys indicated that the ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will begin production later this year, and he expects most of the cast to return. Both Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines are currently starring in other series, but it’s hard to imagine Curb returning without both of them in at least some of the episodes.
As for Jon Stewart, his new HBO project is currently untitled, but it will be an animated program and Bloys said that it may premiere as soon as September or October, which would allow Stewart to cover the current Presidential election. It was also stated that the animation used on the series would let Stewart keep the stories and themes timely.
