The 25th anniversary of Lollapalooza has been everything that it was supposed to be and more. From Malia Obama sightings to Chance the Rapper guest appearances, this historic edition of the longtime festival has been the place to be. If you aren’t lucky enough to be at Grant Park in Chicago, we’ve been live streaming the four-day concert party through Red Bull TV’s broadcast. After two epic days, the festival really kicks in today with the biggest headliners and a full schedule that is not to be missed. Here’s a rundown of the who, where, what to see right here on Crave (my picks in bold).
Channel 1
Big Grams are the best of both worlds. The New York dance pop of Phantogram mixed with the southern hip hop of Outkast’s Big Boi is the perfect summer concoction.
No matter how you feel about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there is no denying that these funk, soul brothas are one of the best live bands bar none and have been for decades. Watching Flea hop around slapping the bass, a smiling Chad Smith beat the drums and Anthony Keidis shirtless just never gets old even though they do.
Channel 2
Leon Bridges is the voice of a generation who got his millennial stamp of approval by being featured in an iPhone commercial. The Fort Worth, Texas soul sensation’s creamy vocals are throwback to ‘60s era Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, but conjure up more emotions than mere nostalgia. The only thing sharper than his golden throat are the vintage suits he sports on-stage.
Disclosure are the most promising dance music duo since Daft Punk. The Lawrence wunderkinds trademark of electro pop beats and R&B-flavored, sing-a-long hooks actually translate live because they play live instruments and bring out real singers. What concept in EDM, right?
Channel 3
Marshmello is a masked, EDM superhero whose secret identity is hidden by a giant marshmello mask. Enuff said.
Big Gigantic are a Colorado DJ duo worth checking out because they pride themselves in “livetronica” which is grounded with live instrumental hip-hop and jazz.
