This fall, the Supergirl TV series is moving from CBS to The CW, and the show is bringing out its biggest guest star to date: Superman! Former Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin is slated to guest star in two episodes as Superman/Clark Kent, making him the seventh actor to portray the Man of Steel in live-action for a TV series.
Although Comic-Con came and went without any footage of Hoechlin in action, The CW has released the first photo of television’s newest incarnation of DC’s iconic hero. Of course, this is still Supergirl’s show, so Melissa Benoist stands with him as the titular character.

The unusual aspect of Hoechlin’s casting is that Warner Bros. Pictures has traditionally been very protective about letting DC’s primary icons (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) appear in live-action on television. That’s one of the reasons that Batman and Wonder Woman never showed up on Smallville. Allowing the Supergirl TV series to use Superman could open the door for the other previously off-limits heroes to be used as well. Although, Batgirl would probably be a better fit than Wonder Woman or Batman for a recurring role on the Supergirl series, since Batgirl and Supergirl have a history together in the DC Universe and Batgirl has only been in one live-action Batman movie to date.
As for Superman, Hoechlin is currently only scheduled to appear in the second season premiere of Supergirl on Monday, October 10, and the following episode on Monday, October 17. But don’t be too shocked if he eventually ends up on the other DC superhero dramas on the network. We’re still holding out hope for a race between Superman and the Flash!
