West Ham’s Home Ground Could Be Renamed the Tesco Stadium

West Ham’s new home ground the Olympic Stadium could be set to receive a pretty major name change, with there being reports that a new deal could see it being renamed the Tesco Stadium.

According to the Daily Mail, a deal between the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and the supermarket chain is brewing, after a proposed £6 million contract with Indian tech powerhouse Mahindra Group potentially falling and the deal expiring in August. West Ham would reportedly be set to receive £1 million from the name change, with their tenancy agreement with the stadium entitling them to 50 per cent of any revenue generated after the initial £4 million.

If a deal between the LLDC and Tesco is agreed upon, it’s unlikely that West Ham fans will be happy with the result – “Tesco Stadium” arguably doesn’t have the same ring to it as the Olympic Stadium. Their Premier League rivals will probably agree with them, too.

West Ham will play their first Premier League home game on August 21 against Bournemouth, though a deal is unlikely to be struck by the LLDC and a partner before then. According to the Evening Standard, the LLDC is looking to get the best deal possible for the taxpyaer, and is therefore willing to wait until the next Premier League season has begun in order to do so.
