Comic-Con 2016 | Brie Larson Officially Cast as Captain Marvel

As superhero movies have become bigger and bigger – and show no signs of abating – fans have remained baffled at a noticeable lack of female characters. In the original comic books, superheroes  have historically been predominantly male, and the Marvel feature films, in reflecting that, have only thrown into contrast the gender imbalance. Enter Captain Marvel, the planned 21st film in the Avengers series, the first superhero film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature a female in a headlining role.

Last night on her Twitter account, Academy Awarding winning actress Brie Larson – star of Room, Short Term 12, and supporting player in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – announced to the world that she is indeed conformed to play Captain Marvel in said film. “Call me Captain Marvel,” she wrote, while sporting a Marvel Studios cap.

Captain Marvel was originally an alien space warrior sent to Earth to look after an evolving humanity. Larson will be playing Carol Danvers, the 2012 version of the character, who was first introduced as the character Ms. Marvel in 1968. The film is due in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
