Marvel’s Daredevil has been the flagship superhero series on Netflix since its debut in 2015. And while Netflix didn’t give the series another lightning fast renewal this year, no one seriously expected the show to end after just two seasons.
During the Luke Cage panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel finally confirmed what we all expected: Daredevil will return for a third season on Netflix. However, the announcement was light on details on when we can expect to see Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock resume his solo adventures. Cox is next slated to play Daredevil in The Defenders miniseries, which is being run by Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez, the showrunners for Daredevil season 2. That means that either Daredevil needs new showrunners, or nothing is going to happen with that series until The Defenders is finished. Potentially, the third season could be pushed to 2018, which is not ideal for fans.
There is also the question of who would return for the third season. Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson are all likely to be back, but Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is getting his own Netflix series. And just because Élodie Yung’s Elektra seemingly perished during the second season doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s out of the picture. Elektra has a habit of coming back from the dead in the comics, and if she’s not returning for this series, then she would probably be in line for her own spinoff show.
The second season also teased the inevitable return to power of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, who memorably appeared in only a few episodes this year. However, Fisk stated his intentions to target Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson pay for their role in taking him down. And he also appeared to be suspicious of Matt after getting punched in the face a little too hard for a blind lawyer to have believably pulled off…even if he was the son of a boxer.
Another dangling plotline is the fact that Matt told Karen Page about his heroic alter ego, but the season ended before she could react. That news could either bring them closer together and repair the rift between them, or further alienate Matt from someone he cares about.
