EA’s Battlefield franchise has been one of the most successful video game series in the company’s portfolio. Now, Battlefield is in development as a TV series.
Deadline broke the story that Paramount TV and Anonymous Content have picked up the rights to develop Battlefield for television. In a statement, Paramount TV President Amy Powell said “Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming…We look forward to working with EA and Anonymous Content and thank Michael Sugar for his tenacity in bringing us this exciting project.”
Michael Sugar (The Knick) and Ashley Zalta are slated to executive produce the series, which debuted as a video game series in 2002 and spawned several sequels. The Battlefield games have taken place in numerous eras, including World War II, Vietnam, an alternate present, and even the far future. The upcoming Battlefield 1 takes place in World War I, but it is currently unclear when the TV series will be set. But if we have a vote, we suggest the mid 22nd century from Battlefield 2142!

So far, the Battlefield TV series doesn’t have a network attached or a creative team. But given the popularity of the franchise, that will probably change very quickly. Still, this will likely be a big budget television show, and that could limit it to some of the basic cable players like FX or TNT, or possibly even the broadcast networks.
