Police in Australia have issued a warning to players of the new iOS and Android game Pokemon GO, with them appearing to suggest that the game has led to budding Pokemon Trainers wandering into police stations in order to catch new Pokemon.
An update posted on the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services Facebook page reads: “For those budding Pokemon Trainers out there using Pokemon GO – whilst the Darwin Police Station may feature as a Pokestop, please be advised that you don’t actually have to step inside in order to gain the pokeballs.
“It’s also a good idea to look up, away from your phone and both ways before crossing the street. That Sandshrew isn’t going anywhere fast. Stay safe and catch ’em all!”
Though the Pokemon GO public beta was released in the US back in May, the mobile game has received a steady roll-out in other regions starting today. New Zealand and Australian iOS and Android users are currently able to play the game, while it has been released on Android in the UK with the iOS version of the game set to follow.
Pokemon GO uses your smartphone’s GPS in order to allow players to capture a variety of Pokemon in different areas, before competing with other players across the world in order to become the very best (like no one ever was).
