An angry man tasked with cleaning up Worthy Farm following Glastonbury 2016 has highlighted the state attendees of the festival leave the camp site in, highlighting the myriad of tents, blankets, sleeping bags and other such personal belongings that were left behind this year.
The man, presumably an employee of the festival who is tasked with helping clear up the waste left over by attendees, posted a video to YouTube of what the Worthy Farm campsite looked like on the Monday evening after the three-day event had concluded. Showing a sea of tents, blow-up beds, and other such large items left for workers to clean up, in the video’s description the man says that it shows “how lazy about 1/4 of them are,” adding: “It’s an insult to all the festival workers.”
Everyone who attends Glastonbury is asked to sign the ‘Love The Farm, Leave No Trace‘ pledge, which asks attendees to follow four rules that will help the festival’s workers and the farm itself. The rules are as follows:
- I will use the toilets provided and not pee on the land.
- I will use the bins provided and not throw away my rubbish on the ground.
- I will take all my belongings home with me again, including my tent and camping equipment.
- I will bag up all my rubbish using the bin bags provided by stewards and use the recycling pens and bins in each campsite.
However, as outlined by the video, many of those who attended Glastonbury 2016 failed to follow these requests.
Though the man filming footage of the camp site says that leftover waste and litter is to be expected, he is more frustrated by the large number of tents and other such personal belongings that are left strewn across the floor. Pointing to a pile of blankets and chairs, he says: “That’s someone’s personal belongings, someone has purchased that… and it’s just been left for someone else to deal with.”
Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis took to the stage with Coldplay during their headline slot at the event, performing an impromptu rendition of ‘My Way’. This led many to suggest that this year’s festival may have been his last, though he has previously said that he wanted to retire in 2020.
