Roy Hodgson Says “I Don’t Know What I’m Doing Here” in Press Conference

Roy Hodgson is continuing with his efforts to raise the blood pressure of every England fan in the country, after exclaiming “I don’t know what I’m doing here” during a press conference held following England’s Euro 2016 defeat.

Hodgson, who failed to discuss England’s humiliating loss to Iceland yesterday in favour of announcing his resignation as England manager instead, was particularly confrontational as he appeared in front of the press. “I don’t know what I am doing here,” he said, adding: “I thought my statement yesterday was sufficient.”

He continued: “I’m no longer England manager. My time has been and gone but I was told by everybody it was important that I appeared because I suppose people are still smarting from our poor performance. I suppose somebody has to stand and take the slings and arrows that come with it.”

Yes, Roy, that’s generally what is expected of a football manager.

After expressing his astonishment at having to appear at a press conference held specifically to address the Euro 2016 exit of a team he has managed for the past four years, Hodgson eventually went on to reveal his thoughts on the match, saying: “I am really disappointed. I did not see the defeat coming. Nothing in the first three games we played here gave me any indication we would play as poorly as we did.”

He continued: “If you don’t turn up and play the football you are capable of even opponent who are not highly thought of like Iceland who are organised and play well on the night can beat you. That’s what happened and I am still recovering from that. As you can understand I am quite fragile. It wasn’t a good night for anybody because we wanted to stay in the tournament and we wanted to do well.”

Speaking of how he thought his team would perform, he added: “We thought we could get to the quarter-finals and beyond. Now we go home as losers in the last 16 and maintain that wretched record of not progressing in the knockout stages of the tournament.”
