BBC News had their say on England’s failed Euro 2016 bid this morning, though the broadcaster perhaps went a little too far after journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer branded the team’s players “overpaid nonces”.
In a newspaper review segment featured on the broadcaster’s news show this morning, Hartley-Brewer summarised the England team’s performance, saying: “At the end of the day, Iceland played better than us… our lot are a bunch of overpaid nonces.” She continued: “They should spend less time on doing their hair and a bit more time playing some football and scoring some goals.”
To clarify, the Oxford Dictionary defines a nonce as “a person convicted of a sexual offence, especially against a child.” Though there are many criticisms that could be levelled at the England team following their disastrous Euro 2016 exit, this probably isn’t one of them.
Watch Hartley-Brewer’s curious condemnation of England below:
England’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland has led to manager Roy Hodgson’s resignation, with bookies now placing odds on who will take up his post with the national squad. Gareth Southgate currently leads the betting selections as a result of his time managing the England Under-21s, while the likes of Gary Neville, Eddie Howe and, weirdly, Alan Shearer also feature.
