“King Kong ain’t got nothing on me!” With apologies to the late and fictional, Alonzo Harris, that’s just not true! King Kong is roaring back into the comic book realm starting next month, and we’ve got the first look at the interior pages of Kong of Skull Island # 1!
Don’t be confused by the similar title. This six issue miniseries has no direct link to the upcoming film, Kong: Skull Island. Instead of tying into a Hollywood remake, Boom! Studios is partnering with DeVito Artworks LLC to create an “official” origin story for the eighth wonder of the world! King Kong was created by director Merian C. Cooper for the classic 1933 film of the same name. Cooper’s family has given their blessing for Kong of Skull Island, which incorporates elements from author Joe DeVito’s Kong: King Of Skull Island novel.
Kong of Skull Island will be a six issue miniseries by writer James Asmus (Gambit) and artist Carlos Magno (Planet of the Apes). Today, CraveOnline is proud to exclusively reveal a few of Magno’s black and white pages from Kong of Skull Island # 1! The final pages will be in color, but they are pretty stunning even at this stage.
Felipe Massafera painted the following cover, which will be the primary image used for Kong of Skull Island # 1.
This cover is by Nick Robles.
And finally, The Goon creator Eric Powell gives us some classic Kong vs. T-Rex action on his variant cover.
Here’s the description from Boom! Studios:
• King Kong, world-famous and original gargantuan ape, is the progenitor of an entire genre, spawning sequels, remakes, and countless other interpretations. You know Kong. You love Kong!
• King Kong was created by Merian C. Cooper, and Kong of Skull Island is grounded in artist/author Joe DeVito’s groundbreaking literary property Skull Island. BOOM! is partnering with DeVito Artworks LLC to present this story, exclusively authorized and endorsed by the Cooper family as their official King Kong/Skull Island prequel and sequel origin story.
• Two fractured and combative civilizations are forced to band together as they venture onto Skull Island—their new home.
Kong of Skull Island # 1 will be released on Wednesday, July 13.
