Spencer Pratt Rips Ryan Reynolds Over ’80s Comments: ‘Stupid Crap’

Spencer Pratt attacked Ryan Reynolds after his comments about 1980s nostalgia. Reynolds recently discussed the decade while promoting his new film Mayday. The actor argued that the era was more complicated than nostalgia suggests. Pratt strongly disagreed with Reynolds’ perspective.

Reynolds discussed the 1980s during a Variety interview. His new movie Mayday takes place during the Cold War. The film follows an American pilot stranded in the Soviet Union in 1987. A former KGB agent then helps the stranded pilot.

Reynolds acknowledged the decade’s popular culture and nostalgic appeal. However, he argued that people often overlook its darker realities. “It’s a tumultuous period,” Reynolds said while discussing the era. He then mocked the way people remember the decade today.

“Oh, yeah. Top Gun. Cocaine! Like, no! It was really scary,” Reynolds said. His comments appeared to challenge the romanticized view of 1980s culture. The decade remains associated with major movies, music and political changes. However, Reynolds emphasized its serious Cold War backdrop.

Pratt appeared to take particular issue with Reynolds’ criticism on X. The former Hills star said he was trying to support American film jobs. He argued that comments like Reynolds could turn Americans against Hollywood.

“Here I am trying to bring back American film jobs,” Pratt wrote. He then criticized what he called Reynolds’ “stupid Crap.” Pratt claimed such remarks were making “every normal American hate them.”

Pratt also attacked Hollywood more broadly in his response. “Hollywood is seriously its own worst enemy,” he wrote. He then directed a personal jab toward Reynolds’ advertising career. “Just stick to the Cricket Wireless ads, dude,” Pratt added.

Reynolds was previously the longtime spokesperson for Mint Mobile. Pratt’s Cricket reference therefore appeared to be another jab at the actor. Meanwhile, Mayday is set to arrive amid renewed interest in ’80s nostalgia.

The decade continues to inspire films, fashion and pop culture. Yet its history remains more complicated than nostalgic references suggest. Reynolds and Pratt ultimately offered different views of the era.
