Michelle Obama didn’t provide a reason for skipping Donald Trump’s inauguration
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has chosen to not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration. On Tuesday, her office confirmed the news but did not provide a reason for her decision. In a statement reported by CNN, they said, “Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration.”
While Obama has decided to forgo her attendance, many others have confirmed their presence. Former President George W. Bush’s office confirmed that he and his wife, Laura Bush, would be present at the inauguration. Furthermore, CNN reported that former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, will also be attending the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol.
Earlier, Michelle Obama was absent from former President Jimmy Carter’s memorial service. However, Barack Obama attended the service, sitting next to Donald Trump as they appeared to be conversing. The state funeral saw a historic guest list, including President Joe Biden, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Vice President Kamala Harris, succeeding First Lady Melania Trump, and more.
Obama’s spokesperson, Crystal Carson, confirmed her absence in a statement to PEOPLE. The statement read, “Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President.”
Michelle Obama has attended every other inauguration since her husband Barack Obama’s swearing-in in 2009. She also participated in Donald Trump’s inauguration when he succeeded Obama in 2017.
