Sony has officially announced the PS4 Neo, the 4K upgrade to the PS4, though has stated that the new console won’t make an appearance at E3 2016.
Speaking about the upcoming console, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president Andrew House told the Financial Times: “It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4. We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”
However, House added that the console would not be unveiled at E3 2016, and did not reveal when its release date and price will be confirmed, adding: “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety.”

When discussing the reasoning behind the development of an upgraded PS4, House continued: “The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs.”
The PS4 Neo will boast better graphics than the current PS4 as a result of its move to Ultra HD, which will up the resolution of the system from 1080p to 4K. Microsoft is also rumored to unveil a brand new 4K version of its Xbox One, reportedly codenamed the Xbox One Scorpio, though the company has yet to confirm whether or not this is the case.
The PS4 Neo was expected to be a big part of Sony’s E3 2016 presentation, but with this move it seems that they’ll be using the event to place a focus upon new games rather than the new console, along with their upcoming PlayStation VR headset. For those who weren’t interested in an upgrade to the PS4, this indicates that Sony’s press conference will feature more game announcements, which is never a bad thing.
