David de Gea has signed a new four year contract with Manchester United.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been reluctant to place David de Gea in his club’s first team during their negotiations with Real Madrid, but now that the Madrid deal has collapsed, it has been confirmed that Man U are now in talks to extend his contract.
De Gea’s previous deal with the Premier League club would have expired in 2016, but negotiations between the club and the goalkeeper’s agent Jorge Mendes have led to both parties finalising a deal that will see De Gea remaining with the club for a further four years, with the option for it to be extended by another year.
De Gea has proven to be their best player of the past two seasons, though he has yet to lace up his boots for them during the 2015/16 league this far. Now that the transfer window has closed and De Gea will remain at the club, he could well be selected to play for the squad’s upcoming match against rivals Liverpool.
Van Gaal previously expressed that the talk surrounding his potential transfer to Madrid had created a negative impact upon De Gea’s morale, though the keeper denied this. Meanwhile, United’s stand-in goalie Sergio Romero has stated that he is committed to fighting for his place in the squad, telling Argentinean newspaper La Nacion: “Playing for United is a dream and if God helps me this dream will never end.”
With it now looking incredibly likely that De Gea will be thrust back into United’s first team plans, Romero could need more than a divine intervention to secure his spot in the club’s starting eleven.
