As someone who pretty much can only remember the words “Mum’s spaghetti” in the entirety of Eminem’s seminal 2003 track Lose Yourself, colour me pretty damn impressed with this YouTube video, which has recently gone viral of a young girl reproducing the track in emotive, powerful sign language.
Shelby Mitchusson uploaded the video eight months ago as a means of audition for the American Sign Language interpreter team at Austin City Limits (spoiler: she got in) but has only this week discovered the glory of internet stardom, with it collecting over a million and a half new views and it’s easy to see why the vid has gone so popular.
Nailing every lyric with flair and rocking some serious talent in the interpretative dance department, Mitchusson’s cover, if you will, of the epic rap song, is like experiencing the ground-breaking track all over again. Except this time I have pubes and can enjoy it with a nice, crisp, legally acquired beer.
Speaking out about her sudden fame on her Facebook page, Mitchusson says she “did not upload it for entertainment purposes. Actually it was my interpreter application submission video to work with an amazing interpreting team at Austin City Limits 2014.”
“I got the gig and still my heart flutters with how well our team worked together equally and the fact that finally these companies are opening their eyes to the true hidden gem talent of Deaf performers & Deaf people signing music– which we NEED to see more of!”
Check out the stunning vid, which continues to rack up thousands of views each day, below and know that this girl would definitely crush it in lip-sync battle.
