Ever wanted to know what it feels like to record with legendary Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins? Reckon that Dave Grohl guy has less talent than a sloshed karaoke singer? Feel like you could write a song that makes “Everlong” look like “Achy Breaky Heart?” It’s time to prove it, friend. And here’s how.
WholeWorldBand is an app that allows users to create their own music by building around “song stems” uploaded by big-name artists. As well as Hawkins, Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera and improg band Umphrey’s McGee have also recently contributed music to the app.
In Hawkins’ case, he uploaded a video session, enabling fans to write their own songs with the Foo Fighter on drums. “I was kinda imagining some sort of song in there, but I want you guys to be creative and think of your own thing,” Hawkins tells WholeWorldBand hopefuls.
Manzanera has already contributed a session to the app, but has come back for another go, this time with a cover of Kanye West and Jay Z’s Watch the Throne single “No Church in the Wild”, which featured a sample of Manzanera’s own track “K Scope.”
As Rolling Stone reports, The Police’s Stewart Copeland, The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and many more have also dropped sessions onto the app, with the resulting fan-made tracks being posted on social media.
WholeWorldBand is available for download on iPhone, iPad, and both Windows and MacOS computers.
