May is traditionally the month when networks axe underperforming shows and announce new series for the fall. ABC is bucking that tradition by renewing almost all of their shows.
For Marvel fans, this means that both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter will get a third and a second season, respectively. Presumably Agent Carter will once again be held for midseason in early 2016 to act as a bridge between the first and second half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which allows Marvel to maintain a presence on the network.
It’s not clear if either of the two recently teased Marvel Studios TV series remain in play for next season. John Ridley’s unannounced Marvel series is still early in development, but his new show, American Crime was renewed. The potential Mockingbird and Lance Hunter spinoff from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appears to be further along, but according to the most recent reports, ABC was waiting for a pilot script to come in before making the call one way or the other.

ABC’s other returning series include Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Black-ish, Secrets & Lies, Fresh off the Boat, How To Get Away With Murder, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, The Goldbergs, Shark Tank, The Middle, and Modern Family. The biggest surprise was the renewal of Galavant, ABC’s musical comedy that found only a cult audience.
Only three ABC series will be canceled: Forever, Cristela and Resurrection. That doesn’t leave much room for ABC to add new series to the schedule.
ABC will announce its final Fall 2015 schedule later this month.
