The fiasco surrounding North Korea and its hacking/threatening shenanigans was something that was known the world over, and it ultimately resulted in Sony pulling the theatrical release of The Interview altogether. They eventually reinstated a partial release of the film in digital formats, which led to the movie hitting the top spot on the Google Play Movie charts, although the number one slot has since been claimed by Guardians of the Galaxy.
So there you have it. As broken as the whole release of The Interview was, it still managed to pull in fifteen million bucks over four days and hold the top spot in Google Play for very short while. Honestly, that’s probably more than anyone expected.
