BOTM: Motopony Reach Psychedelic Apex With ‘Gypsy Woman’

With a new album on the horizon on the heels of last year’s immensely promising Idle Beauty EP, Seattle’s Motopony are finally seeing the sunshine after fighting through an evolutionary battlefield of lineup changes, personal turmoil and professional upheaval, relentlessly driven to a higher purpose. As they gear up for their next LP and a featured run at SXSW 2015, the band rounds out their jaunt as Crave’s Band of The Month for November this week with a brilliantly psychedelic performance of new song “Gypsy Woman”.

Lead guitarists Mike Notter and Nate Daley shape the perimeters of sound alongside the immersive rhythmic vertebrae of drummer Forrest Mauvais and bassist/synth-maestro Terry Mattson, as Andrew Butler’s fingerwork on keys delivers an ethereal sheen. Frontman Daniel Blue, starry-eyed Bohemian-poet ringleader, pulls the sound to a rich psychedelic-pop center and sets the energy exchange in motion between listener and creator. As they prep their sophomore full-length, slated for release in spring 2015, they’ve teamed with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards, Trail Of The Dead) to shape the proper frequency.

Interview: QOTSA’s Josh Homme on ‘Lots of New Songs’

We recently met up with Motopony at legendary drummer Matt Sorum’s home studio in Los Angeles for an intimate CraveOnstage session, and as evidenced by the hypnotic psychedelic swell of “Buffalo Medicine” and the illumination of “Get Down (Come Up)” it was clear that we had tapped a streak of excellence from a band entering a Goldilocks zone of creativity, momentum and opportunity.

Check out the band’s final CraveOnstage performance below with the new track “Gypsy Woman,” featuring a gorgeously trippy rising sound as the song builds to a breathlessly intense climax.

We also sat down with the guys in the studio for a laugh-packed in-depth interview on music as transcendent communication, Richard Simmons pre-show workout tapes and more. While you’re at it, keep up with the band at their official site, as well as on Facebook
