David Moyes has discussed his firing from Manchester United for the first time, highlighting the difficulties he faced during his time with the club.
Speaking to the BBC, the ex-Everton manager said that he is “ready to return” to management despite the pressures he faced at the Manchester club, which saw him sacked from post after just one season.
Although prohibited from divulging some details regarding his employment with United due to the terms of contract, Moyes spoke of his disappointment with his time in the role, saying:”I got the job and I expected it to be a six-year plan. I signed a six-year contract… disappointed it didn’t go to plan. I expected to be given an opportunity to fulfil that and it wasn’t what was expected.
“It was really difficult when I lost the job initially because I didn’t really see it coming, even though I had been losing games.
“I knew that it could be difficult but I joined a club that I felt stood behind their managers, made sure they supported them in difficult times. And, you know, Sir Alex had difficult times when he first took over.
“And I do understand that the landscape has changed a little bit in football, but I think that United always stood for the right things and I expected them to do what was right with me.”
After Moyes’ contract with the club was terminated, Man U looked to Dutch manager Louis van Gaal to help turn the team’s fortunes around. Unfortunately, he has also experienced great difficulty in getting the club back to its winning ways, leading many to backtrack on their opinion that United’s poor season was Moyes’ fault, instead looking to the failings of the team itself.
Moyes didn’t seem to show any animosity towards the appointment of Van Gaal, saying: “Louis van Gaal has got a difficult job as well, just like I did when I took over at the job, and he needs to be given that opportunity to get his mark on the team, turn it around.
“He is a very experienced manager and he should be given that chance to do so.”
Moyes was uncertain of where his next management job will be, but said that he will “know the right club when it comes along”.
