The Ice Bucket Challenge has proven to be a huge viral hit, garnering millions of dollars in donations for the ALSA.
Corey Griffin, philanthropist and co-founder of the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, has died after drowning in a diving accident off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The 27-year-old had played a huge role in getting the Ice Bucket Challenge off the ground, which has raised millions of dollars in donations to the charity organization ALSA and featured a whole host of celebrities taking part in order to raise awareness. He tragically passed away on Saturday (August 16th)

According to The Independent, Griffin started up the Ice Bucket Challenge after his friend Pete Frates was diagnosed with ALS. Posting on his Facebook page, Frates wrote: “Helping out was nothing new for Griff. He held his own event for me back in 2012, just a few months after diagnosis.

“He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS. We texted everyday, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events.”
The Ice Bucket Challenge has seen everyone from Bill Gates, to David Beckham, to George Bush and Charlie Sheen take part, spreading the word about ALS and encouraging donations. So far $22.9 million has been donated since the drive took off a few days ago.
