5 Summer Blockbusters That Should Be Comics

We live in the era of transmedia. There’s rarely a franchise film that doesn’t also have a deal that includes merchandising of some kind. Movies can no longer just be movies. They have to sell toys, statues, video games, tie-novels and anything else that the marketing team dreams up.

That explains those incredibly ridiculous ads in which the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past ate fast food with the help of their mutant powers.

Comics have historically been one of the best ways to explore the world of a film after the movie is over. Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Marvel kept Star Wars alive in the minds of fans with a monthly comic book series that helped fill the gap between each movie. Dark Horse Comics eventually redefined the movie-tie in comics with its Aliens and Predator titles, before expanding its reach to include Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator, Robocop and more.

Today, almost every major comic book company publishes comics that are adapted from movies, including IDW, Dynamite Entertainment, Boom! Studios, Legendary Comics, DC Comics and Dark Horse. Even Marvel is getting back in the game with new Star Wars comics coming in 2015.

But there are still a few movie properties that are perfect candidates to become comic books, especially among the big summer action films. Therefore, I’ve come up with a list of the top 5 Summer Blockbusters That Should Be Comics.
