Kaymer Dominates Field To Win US Open

Germany’s Martin Kaymer has won his second golf major after taking out the US Open by eight shots at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina.

The 29-year-old led from the opening day and showed few nerves on his way to shooting a one-under par 69 to finish nine-under for the tournament. US golfers Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton shared second at one-under, but the day belonged to Kaymer, who became just the eighth player in US Open history to win after leading wire-to-wire.

The former world No.1 and 2010 US Open champion said everything went to plan over the four days. “I played very brave,” he said at the trophy presentation. “I didn’t make any mistakes, you know, the last two wins that I had in America, especially this week.”

Jason Day was the best-placed Aussie in equal fourth after finishing at one-over. The 26-year-old said he was satisfied with the result after struggling with a thumb injury for much of the year. “Being out for so long, this is my second real tournament back after the injury on one of the biggest stages…so I’m pretty pleased,” he told AAP.

Countryman and current world No.1 Adam Scott finished equal ninth at two-over – his best result at a US Open. “I felt like my game came into a really good spot today,” Scott said. “So it would have been nice to start the day under par and tried to make something happen. But it was just a few too many errors throughout the first three rounds.”
