Twitter’s New ‘Mute’ Feature Allows You to Shut People Up Without Blocking Them

Twitter has added a new feature on its mobile app that handily allows you to remove certain people from your Twitter feed without unfollowing them.

While the new passive-aggressive feature may sound a little redundant, it has been designed so that people can potentially prohibit seeing tweets from people they aren’t all that interested in hearing from, whilst not offending them by unfollowing them completely. It will also mean that users who routinely livetweet events that you aren’t particularly interested in can be temporarily muted for a period of time.

The Verge reports that Twitter is trying out the new feature on both Apple’s iOS and Android, with selected users currently able to access it. Other third-party services such as Tweetbot have offered this service for a while, though Tweetbot currently allows users to decide how long they wish to mute an account for. While Twitter doesn’t yet grant users this option, it is likely that they will once the feature is officially rolled out.
