Jose Mourinho Says England Could Win the World Cup… Er, What?

Jose Mourinho has clearly been too focused upon club football to focus on the international stage, as he seems to think that England has a change of winning the World Cup 2014 tournament at Rio.

Speaking to Yahoo!, the Chelsea manager said:”England, everybody says ‘no, no, no, no, no’. I always say, ‘why not?’ Because I don’t understand why not.  When I see the players and the experience of the players and the clubs where they play, I don’t understand why one day it cannot happen.”

Mourinho also said that he believes England underachieves on the international stage, saying:

“[The Premier League] is the best championship in the world; it is the most competitive one. I know that many foreign players are in the top clubs but at the same time the national team players, all of them, they play in the top clubs in the Premier League – players from Chelsea, from Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal, a few from Everton also – all of them.

“They know what the big stage is; they know how to play under pressure; they know how to play for the big clubs; they play in the Champions League which is probably the most difficult football in the world, so I don’t see why they don’t. I don’t see why.  So one day they have to do.”

Perhaps one day England will lift the the trophy again, but considering their hopelessly dull 1-0 victory against Denmark last night, it’s looking that day is a long, long way off.
