HBO Takes Jack Black & Tim Robbins To ‘The Brink’

Back in 1997, Jack Black co-starred in a series of comedy shorts about his band, Tenacious D on HBO. Fourteen years after the final Tenacious D short was unveiled, Black is coming back to HBO for a new comedy series.

Deadline is reporting that HBO has ordered a full season for “The Brink,” a ‘dark comedy” starring Black, Tim Robbins and Pablo Schreiber as “three compromised souls must pull through the chaos around them to save the planet from World War III.” Black will play a low level Foreign Service officer named Alex Coppins, Robbins will portray U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander and Schreiber is set as Zeke Callahan, an ace Navy fighter pilot.

“The Brink” was created by former “Weeds” executive producer, Roberto Benabib and his brother Kim Benabib; with Hollywood veteran Jerry Weintraub attached as an executive producer. The series co-stars Aasif Mandvi, Maribeth Monroe, Geoff Pierson, Esai Morales and Eric Ladin.

The Deadline reports that “The Brink” received a very fast pickup from HBO, as the pilot was screened for the very first time yesterday. The HBO brass responded to it with an immediate series order.

Jay Roach directed the pilot episode. Given the speed with which “The Brink” came together, it does not currently have a premiere date on HBO. But a late 2014 or an early 2015 premiere seem like strong possibilities.
