Earlier this year, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman announced plans for a new monthly horror comic called “Outcast” that will revolve around an exorcist. While “Outcast” isn’t coming out until 2014, it’s already landed on one of the premium cable networks.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kirkman has signed a deal with Cinemax for at least a pilot script of “Outcast,” written by Kirkman himself. The Cinemax deal includes a “large penalty” if “Outcast” doesn’t go forward and there was reportedly a multiple network bidding war to land the show. “Outcast” was previously picked up by Fox International Channels, which sells “The Walking Dead’ to various channels around the world.
“Outcast” follows a man named Kyle Barnes, who has been haunted by possessions since he was a child. In the present, Kyle attempts to discover why he was targeted, but he unexpectedly discovers something that could end the world as we know it.
“Outcast” is the fourth Kirkman created comic to get a TV deal. “The Walking Dead” counts twice when you include the upcoming spinoff/companion series in 2015. AMC is also adapting Kirkman’s “Thief of Thieves” for television.
In a brief statement, Kirkman said “Despite the success of The Walking Dead, Outcast is only my second foray into the horror genre. I think Kyle Barnes is every bit as compelling as Rick Grimes and demonic possession is way scarier than zombies–so this is going to be fun.”
Kirkman is also producing the TV adaptation of David Schulner’s comic book series “Clone” for Universal.
