Mark Webber is rapidly approaching the end of his F1 career, but the Australian apparently doesn’t have a problem discussing his move to Porsche with a job or two still ahead of him.
Webber still has a couple of F1 dates to complete with Red Bull Racing– in the US and Brazil- but has identified Le Mans as priority when he switches to Porsche in the 2014 season to lead the German manufacturer’s return to the World Endurance Championship.
“To put that with the Monaco (Webber’s F1 victory), that would be nice,” he said.
“Whether one is enough there, maybe I want to grab a few. But of course you’ve got to get the first one done, which won’t be easy. We’ve got some tough competition.
“So that’s the first goal, to win Le Mans; win that outright, down the road.
“And then we’ll go from there.”
Webber said he wouldn’t be able to ‘turn off’ his love to race with the move away from F1 representing the next chapter of his career.
A two-time participant at Le Mans, Webber hasn’t had a ton of success at the world’s 24-hour endurance classic. His engine failed in 1998 before he twice flipped his Mercedes in practice a year later, resulting the team withdrawing due to safety reasons.
Despite recent comments from four-time world champion teammate Sebastian Vettel saying he holds “enormous respect” for Webber, the 37-year-old wasn’t shy about throwing a few final barbs the way of his German team leader.
When asked if he could trust Vettel not to ignore team orders again, Webber responded by saying, “Well not the Malaysia situation, because we know what would happen. A cheetah never changes its spots,” referring to Vettel’s move earlier this year when he shrugged off instructions to steal the Malaysian win from the Australian.
The US Grand Prix will be held on Novemeber 17 before moving to Brazil on the 24th.
