There’s no escape from The New 52 if you’re a DC fan.
Following Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, the popular line of Direct-to-Video DC animated films is plunging head first into the waters of The New 52 with Justice League: War, an adaptation of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s Justice League: Origins storyline that kicked off the DC reboot in 2011.
At New York Comic-Con, moderator Gary Miereanu brought out director Jay Olivia, legendary voice director Andrea Romero, executive producer James Tucker and the new voice of Batman, Jason O’Mara to talk about Justice League: War. Apparently, future Justice League movies will retain some continuity between each other and keep most of the new voice cast, including Alan Tudyk as Superman, Michelle Monaghan as Wonder Woman, Justin Kirk as Green Lantern, Shemar Moore as Cyborg and Sean Astin as Shazam.
The panelists said that Shazam is filling Aquaman’s role in this Justice League story because the King of the Seas is finally getting his own DC animated movie as part of a big push. However, the next two films following Justice League: War are both Batman movies: Son of Batman & Batman: Assault on Arkham; which ties into the popular Batman video game series.
Three clips from Justice League: War were shown during the panel. The first video featured Batman and Green Lantern’s first meeting that seemed to be a direct adaptation of the same scene in the comic. The second preview scene followed Wonder Woman as she went looking for ice cream and the third video returned to Batman and Green Lantern as they fought Darkseid’s forces.
During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan suggested a Robin animated movie that would follow all of the Robins and explore how partnering with Batman ruined their lives. The panelists seemed intrigued by the idea and appeared to consider it. However, the panelists were less enthused about suggestions that they adapt The Sinestro Corps War of Kingdom Come by insisting that there are limits to what they can do with the animated movies.
In a bright spot for Batman Beyond fans, one of the panelists said that Bruce Timm may have an idea for a Batman Beyond animated feature that would revisit the Batman of the future who was featured in the classic Bruce Timm/Paul Dini animated series.
Justice League: War doesn’t currently have a firm release date, but it is expected to premiere in early 2014.
